Popeye Chicken

Location: Numerous. The one reviewed was at Jl. Demangan Baru, near Kolese De Brito.

Review: Although one may say that it is a cheap rip-off of KFC, the Indonesian version of Popeye's chicken has some good chicken at amazingly cheap prices. There are only a few menu choices, so don't go there for diversity.

Suggestion: Packet number 5 (2 boneless chicken breasts, rice and iced tea).

Price: */5 - At most 6,000 rupiah per person.
Atmosphere: ***/5 - Clean, but open to the street so it gets pretty noisy.
Service: ****/5 - Fast and friendly. Don't expect much English though!
Taste: ***/5 - Pretty good.

Review: Biarpun mungkin dapat dikatakan bajakan dari KFC, versi Indonesia Popeye Chicken enak dengan harga murah. Hanya ada beberapa pilihan menu, maka jangan ke sini untuk diversitas.

Saran: Paket 5 (2 dada ayam tanpa tulang, nasi dan es teh).
Harga: */5 - Paling Rp. 6.000 per orang.
Suasana: ***/5 - Bersih, tapi terbuka ke jalan maka bisa berisik.
Pelayanan: ****/5 - Cepat dan ramah. Tapi jangan mengharapkan banyak bahasa Inggris!
Rasa: ***/5 - Cukup Enak.

Waroeng Steak and Shake

Location: Numerous. The one I am rating was on Jl. Cendrawsih.

Review:
The most popular cheap steak chain in Yogyakarta, it has some pretty good steak and some (somewhat) creative menu items. There are three kinds of crispy steaks (sirloin, tenderloin, and chicken) as well as a few kinds of other steaks (chicken with either black pepper or mushrooms, beef with either black pepper or mushrooms, and imported New Zealand beef).

Recommended: If you order a crispy steak, go for the double. The local steak is just as good as the imported one.

Price: **/5 - The cheapest steak in Yogyakarta. Unless you eat a lot, you will spend less than 15,000 rupiah.
Atmosphere: ***/5 - About standard. It is clean, with popular Indonesian hits being played in the background.
Service: ****/5 - Very friendly and fast.
Taste: ***/5 - Pretty good, although the quality varies depending on who's cooking.

Review:
Steak murah paling terkenal di Yogyakarta, ada steak yang cukup enak dan beberapa makanan yang (agak) unik. Ada tiga jenis crispy steak (sirloin, tenderloin, dan chicken) dan juga beberapa jenis steak lain chicken dengan lada hitam atau jamur, beef dengan lada hitam atau jamur, dan imported New Zealand beef).

Saran: Kalau pesan crispy steak, pesanlah yang doble. Steak lokal rasanya mirip steak impor.

Harga: **/5 - Steak paling murah di Yogyakarta. Kecuali kalau Anda makan banyak, tidak mungkin Anda keluar lebih dari Rp. 15.000.
Suasana: ***/5 - Standard. Bersih, dengan lagu-lagu Indonesia populer diputar.
Pelayanan: ****/5 - Sangat ramah dan cepat.
Rasa: ***/5 - Cukup enak, tapi rasanya tergantung siapa yang masak.

Ringo Steak

Location: Food Court, Malioboro Mall, Jl. Malioboro

Review: Located in the heart of Yogyakarta, Ringo Steak at first doesn't seem like a good place to eat Western food. The dining area is food court standard and it is located right next to a childrens' gaming centre. However, it has some of the best Western food I've ever tried that falls into that price range.

Recommendation: The schnitzel is good. The cordon bleu isn't bad either. Best to get them in a Ringo combo, though.

Price: ***/5 - The Ringo combo, which includes meat, veggies, french fries and orange juice, is only 20,000 rupiah and well worth it.
Atmosphere: **/5 - Depending on what day you go there, the tables may be messy. However, since cleaning tables is the duty of food court staff and not Ringo staff, they cannot be blamed.
Service: ***/5 - Friendly. The food takes slightly longer than most cheap steak places.
Taste: ****/5 - Delicious. The orange juice is lacking though.

Review: Terletak di pusat Yogyakarta, Ringo steak tampaknya bukan tempat yang baik untuk makan makanan Barat. Tempat makan standar untuk food court dan Ringo terletak di sebelah tempat permainan anak. Namun, makanannya yang paling enak yang saya pernah coba dengan harga sedemikian.

Saran: Schnitzelnya enak, dan Cordon Bleu juga. Sebaiknya dipesan dalam Ringo Combo.

Harga: ***/5 - Ringo combo, yang termasuk daging, sayur, kentang, dan jus jeruk, hanya Rp. 20.000.
Suasana: **/5 - Tergantung Anda ke sana hari apa, meja mungkin kotor. Namun, karena pembersihan meja bukan tanggung jawab staf Ringo, mereka tidak dapat disalahkan.

Location: 2nd floor, Safir Square (near the bowling alley), Jl. Adi Sucipto

Review:
With a nice view of Jl. Adi Sucipto, Tao Kitchen is pretty cozy. The menu has a variety of Asian and Western dishes, mainly Chinese but also Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian.

Recommendations: The pineapple fried rice was good. Some of their appetizers are inventive and fun to try.

Price: ****/5 - Roughly standard for any restaurant in a mall. Most entrees cost around 25,000 rupiah, with drinks between 5,000 and 10,000 rupiah.
Atmosphere: ****/5 - Clean and well lit, with a nice view of Jl. Adi Sucipto. Depending on where you sit, it may feel cramped.
Service: */5 - Dreadful. We waited 25 minutes for our dessert (a simple ice cream sundae) and another 20 before a staff member finally took a picture of us as requested.
Taste: **/5 - Most of the food was pretty bland, even though it looked appealing on the menu.

Lokasi: Lantai 2, Safir Square (dekat bowling), Jl. Adi Sucipto

Review:
Dengan pandangan Jl. Adi Sucipto yang bagus, Tao Kitchen cukup nyaman. Menu ada beberapa jenis makanan Asia dan Barat; sebagian besar makanan Chinese, tapi ada juga makanan Vietnam, Thailand, dan Indonesia.

Saran: Nasi goreng nanas cukup enak. Beberapa makanan kecil unik dan menarik dicoba.

Price: ****/5 - Standard untuk resto di mal. Sebagian besar makanannya berharga sekitar Rp. 25.000, dengan minuman antara Rp. 5.000 dan Rp. 10.000
Atmosphere: ****/5 - Bersih dan terang, dengan pandangan Jl. Adi Sucipto yang indah. Mungkin terasa sempit, terngantung Anda duduk di mana.
Service: */5 - Jelek sekali. Kami menunggu 25 menit untuk makanan penutup kami (hanya ice cream sundae), lalu 20 menit lagi sebelum staf akhirnya mengambil foto kami seperti yang kami minta.
Taste: **/5 - Sebagian besar makanannya tidak ada rasa, biarpun kelihatan menarik di menu.

R & B Grill

Location: Jl. R.W. Monginsidi 37

Review:
Pretty cozy. The menu boasts an impressive array of Western foods as well as a few Asian classics. One can eat either indoors or outdoors. In the indoor dining room there are a few TVs which are hooked up to satellite TV. The most impressive feature is the grocery store, which stocks around 1OO assorted imported food products.

Recommendation: Anything with the potato wedges. The pasta is pretty good too.

Price: *****/5 - Easily the most expensive Yogyakartan restaurant I've ever been in that wasn't part of a hotel, the wagyu steak will set you back 25O,OOO rupiah. If you order pasta, you may spend around 45,OOO rupiah each.
Atmosphere: ****/5 - Decorations were plain, but the dining area was very clean. Each table comes with a candle for those romantics out there.
Service: ****/5 - Friendly enough. The servers have a pretty good command of English. Along with one's meal one receives a small appetizer like breadsticks or beans in a pod.
Taste: **/5 - Everything I've had that had meat in it was completely unimpressive. The pasta was good and the tea was okay, but both my burger and steak burger felt like a waste of money.

Review:
Cukup nyaman. Menu termasuk banyak jenis makanan Barat dan beberapa makanan khas Asia. Bisa makan di dalam atau di patio. Di ruang makan dalam ada televisi dengna Indovision. Bagian yang paling menarik adalah swalayannya, yang menjual sekitar 1OO jenis makanan dan barang impor.

Disarankan: Apapun yang ada kentang goreng. Pasta juga enak.

Harga: *****/5 - Jelas resto di Yogyakarta yang paling mahal yang saya pernah (yang tidak termasuk hotel}, steak wagyu sekitar Rp. 25O.OOO. Kalau memesan pasta, Anda mungkin keluar sekitar Rp. 45.OOO per orang.
Suasana: ****/5 - Dekorasinya sederhana, tetapi bersih sekali. Setiap meja lengkap dengan lilin untuk para romantis.
Pelayanan: ****/5 - Cukup ramah. Pelayan cukup pintar berbahasa Inggris. Bersama makanan Anda, Anda mendapatkan makanan kecil seperti roti atau kacang.
Rasa: **/5 - Setiap kali saya makan daging di sini saya kecewa. Pastanya enak dan tehnya lumayan, tetapi hamburger dan hamburger steak terasa seperti buang uang.

Es Buah PK

Location: At the Jl. Magelang - Jl. Pangkuningratan intersection

Review: For those of you who don't like eating at street-side stands, this is not for you. Otherwise, you will probably enjoy this place. Even though it has a limited menu (the items are: bakso (meatballs), es buah (a kind of fruit desert), iced tea, and iced orange drink), it will definitely keep you satisfied. Just be careful of the bees, which swarm the place in certain seasons.

Recommendation: Go for the es buah, even if you have nothing to eat. You won't regret it.

Price: **/5 - You can have a bowl of bakso for 6,000 rupiah, and a bowl of es buah for 4,000.
Atmosphere: **/5 - If you aren't used to roadside places like this one you are in for a surprise. Beware of bees.
Service: ****/5 - Friendly, especially to regular customers. Be warned, don't expect much English to be spoken.
Taste: ****/5 - The es buah is famous, and rightly so. The bakso is okay; some like it and some don't.

Lokasi: Di pertigaan Jl. Magelang - Jl. Pangkuningratan

Review: Untuk orang yang tidak suka makan di warung angkringan, ini bukanlah untuk Anda. Akan tetapi, kemungkinan besar Anda akan senang di sini. Walaupun menunya terbatas (ada bakso, es buah, es teh, dan es jeruk), Anda pasti akan puas. Hati-hati dengan tawon, yang sering ada di sana pas musim tertentu.

Saran: Makan es buah, biarpun tidak pesan bakso. Anda pasti tidak akan menyesal.

Harga: **/5 - Semangkok bakso hanya Rp. 6.000 dan semangkok es buah hanya Rp. 4.000.

Location: Jl. Palagan Tentara Pelajar Km. 8,5

Review:
Decent Korean food. One can order either a cook-it-yourself all you can eat barbecue buffet or single portions. It is pretty far from the city. The dining room is roofed but has no walls. Large parking lot.

Recommended: Go for the buffet. It's easily the best deal.

Price: *****/5 - The buffet is around 88,000 rupiah. Single portions are between 50,000 and 150,000. Not for those on a budget.
Atmosphere: ***/5 - Nothing special. No music. Clean.
Service: ****/5 - Pretty good service. The servers are friendly and speak English decently. We had the buffet so I can't say anything about the speed.
Taste: ****/5 Pretty good. I am not the best cook in the world, but the stuff that my fiancee cooked turned out well.


Lokasi: Jl. Palagan Tentara Pelajar Km. 8,5

Review:
Makanan Korea yang lumayan. Bisa memesan buffet barbecue (makan sepuasnya, masak sendiri) atau porsi perorangan. Lumayan jauh dari kota. Ruang makan ditutup dengan atap tapi tanpa dinding. Parkir luas.

Disarankan: Makan buffet. Jelas yang paling hemat.

Price: *****/5 - Harga buffet Rp. 88.000. Porsi perorangan antara Rp. 50.000 dan Rp. 150.000. Bukan harga mahasiswa.
Atmosphere: ***/5 - Tidak istimewa. Tidak ada musik. Bersih.
Pelayanan: ****/5 - Pelayanan cukup bagus. Pelayan ramah dan mampu berbahasa Inggris. Kami makan buffet, maka tidak bisa saya nilaikan kecepatan.
Rasa: ****/5 Cukup enak. Saya bukan koki terbaik di dunia, tetapi yang dimasak tunangan saya jadinya enak.
